Thin film transistor (TFT) devices have enabled the mass production of flat panel displays and an industry that is worth over $100 billion annually. Unlike CMOS transistors which are constrained on silicon wafers, TFT can be manufactured on glass and are suitable for large area electronics.

In the recent years, there has been considerable progress in the commercialization of TFT devices on flexible substrates. In this configuration, the glass is substituted with a polymer film such as polyimide. This has led to the rapid adoption of thin flexible AMOLED displays in smartphones and wearables.
